چکیده

Congenital melanocytic nevi (CMN) are defined as melanocytic nevi that present at birth or within the first few months of life. Small or medium-sized nevi occur in approximately 1% to 6% of all newborns, whereas giant nevi occur in approximately 1 in 20,000 [1-3]. There are two main considerations in the treatment of CMN. The first is predicting the risk of its transformation to melanoma, and the second is aesthetic satisfaction. Generally, it is known that the bigger the nevus, the greater the risk of malignant transformation. The risk of melanoma transformation of small and mediumsized CMN is controversial, but it is generally thought to be less than 4.9% [4]. Currently, there is no consensus regarding the management of small and medium-sized CMN, whereas interventions are highly recommended early in life for giant congenital nevi. Nevertheless, even a small nevus on the face or other visible area may precipitate the need for surgery for cosmetic and psychological reasons. Some surgeons believe that surgical management should be considered early, so that excision of the nevus and scar maturaDae Hwa Kim, Il Hwan Byun, Dae Hyun Lew, Won Jai Lee

High frequency of BRAFV600E mutation in acquired nevi and small congenital nevi, but low frequency of mutation in medium-sized congenital nevi.

To investigate whether the frequency of the BRAF(V600E) (V-raf murine sarcoma virus oncogene homolog B1) mutation in melanocytic nevi is associated with sun exposure patterns, we examined 120 acquired melanocytic nevi excised from various anatomic sites, including glabrous skin, as well as 62 congenital nevi. We used a new mutation detection system based on the shifted termination assay, called...

Pigmented Skin Lesions in Children (Melanocytic Nevus, Clonal Nevus and Halo Nevus) — Symptoms and Treatment

Benign pigmented skin lesions are very common in children and can be generally classified into congenital or acquired nevi. Congenital nevi can be small, medium or large. Large nevi are usually associated with a higher risk of malignant transformation into melanoma. Acquired melanocytic nevi can be classified into typical melanocytic nevi, clonal nevi, or halo nevi. Cytological atypia can be ob...

Small Dysplastic Congenital Melanocytic Nevi in Childhood as Possible Melanoma Imitators

Small pigmented lesions in children can represent a significant diagnostic challenge. If the diagnostic features and therapeutic approach are relatively well established in large and giant nevi, there is still much controversy regarding small and intermediate-sized congenital pigmented lesions that can lead to significant diagnostic challenges, both clinically and dermoscopically, and consequen...

Dermoscopic Features of Small, Medium, and Large-Sized Congenital Melanocytic Nevi

BACKGROUND Congenital melanocytic nevi (CMN) are present at birth. It is well known that the presence of large-sized congenital nevus in early life could predict a major risk of developing melanoma. OBJECTIVE To investigate the clinical and dermoscopic features of the CMN, to search for and highlight any differences between small-sized, medium-sized, large-sized CMN. METHODS A nonrandomized...
